They Tell Their Story

Edna's Story

Edna was brought up in a Christian home but her mother (and her mother before her) had been very superstitious. Yes, her parents were Christians but fear and superstition became a very real part of Edna's life. When she was a child and there was a thunderstorm, her mother would push her under the stairs, and these experiences only went to ingrain fear in her as a child and into the following years.

She went to Sunday school as a child and even became a Christian when she was a teenager. Yet the fear that came from her childhood stayed with her.

Edna read horoscopes in an effort to find some security, but they only went to reinforce the fear. She got married and then found she was plagued with nightmares in which she would dream of the world coming to an end and her being left alone.

Fear gripped me, she later testified. Indeed so bad was it that she would walk the streets, unable to sleep.

On one occasion her husband was out for the day and a friend invited her to meetings at a local Congregational Church where a well known Christian Leader was speaking.  At the front of the church, on the wall, she saw a Bible text referring to “the sins of your forefathers” and Edna just saw the word “Mum” over it.

Following the afternoon meeting Edna received prayer for deliverance from the fear and the nightmares. She testifies, “A whole weight lifted away from me. I forgave my mother and was cleansed.”

Immediately after this her husband took her away on a holiday to Jersey , where they, of course, flew. For the first time she was no longer plagued by the fear that had dominated her life. She was free.

Today Edna has a real concern for children who, like her when a child, take on the fear and the superstition of their parents. She has now been a Christian for 57 years, living on her own since her husband passed away in 1991.

Today she has a living vibrant faith, secure in Jesus' love, and free from all fear and superstition. She'll often be heard to say, “I fail the Lord sometimes, but he never fails me.” Such is the love and security that she has come to know. What a transformation from that fearful young girl. How wonderful!

Edna's story, although short, reaches out to those of us who have been ensnared by superstition and fear.  She came to realise that God was there for her, His love reaching out to her, and so she had nothing to fear.

If you have fear dominating your life, then allow God's perfect love to come in and transform you.  If you need to be convinced of His love, go to the main Contents Page of the Resources section of this site and read through the pages on God's love. He loves YOU and is there for YOU. May you come to know that wonderful love and come to know the assurance and freedom that accompanies it.
