Thought for the Day : Proverbs 11:11

v.11 Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed.

The welfare of the community. How can we bless the community in which we live? By being upright. How does that bring blessing? Because this is another way of saying “be righteous and God blesses your righteousness,” and if He blesses this person that blessing will rub off on the community (city) and they will be blessed and will be lifted up.

Meanwhile the opposite is true: when the unrighteous or wicked person operate, it brings down the city. How will they do that? With their mouth. Unrighteous people do most damage with their mouths. The words they speak undermine others, demean and pull down, weaken resolve and generally bring harm and destruction. What contrasts!

It's almost frightening to realise the effect our mouths can have. We can bring down whole communities. Yet the challenge is to be righteous people, living under the blessing of God, for if that is truly so, then that blessing will overflow to the community in which we live.
