Clarifying Understanding
Disciples
Jesus' followers were first and foremost disciples'. A disciple
was simply one who accepted the teaching of another. However the concept
also meant that they learned to follow or become like their teacher,
i.e. they imitated him. Our calling is, therefore to:
- become
learners (receiving what Jesus taught)
- seek
to become like Jesus (he is our model)
Discipline
You will see the closeness of the two words. We often think of
discipline' negatively, thinking of it as painful correction'. However,
if we think of soldiers, we understand they are trained and disciplined.
For them discipline means they are brought into a heightened state of
self control. A highly disciplined person is simply one who:
- has
first brought their mind under control
- and
then their body to conform to the wishes of the mind.
B.
Taking Control of your Mind and then Activity
One
of the most amazing truths revealed by Scripture is that God has given
us free will, the ability to CHOOSE, so as disciples' we can CHOOSE
to:
1.
Think about what is going on within us
Becoming
self aware - recognise fears, doubts etc. and address the reason for
them
e.g.
Psa 42:5 What did David ask?
...
2.
Work at building faith
Faith
is about hearing and then doing and we sometimes need to know HOW to
do.
Jas

How
would you define that?

3.
Do what we have learnt, and use what we have been given
So,
we see the Bible teaches that if we seek and receive spiritual resources,
we will get more and more, which we should then use.
Mt
25:24-25 How can we have a negative view of what we already
have, and of God?

the whole subject of learning, how does servant heartedness play a big
part?
