"The Anointing"

Messages from Sunday mornings

Reading : 1 Samuel 10 vs 1-8.

Background

•  Judges governed Israel (Leaders who were often prophetic)

•  They were not always good ones - see Judges 17 v 5

•  The people of Israel asked for a King so that they may be as other nations.

•  Samuel very disappointed.

•  God assured Samuel they had not rejected him but God

•  Question: How did Samuel hear from God? How do we hear from God?

•  Audible voice, dreams, conscience, His word the Bible.

The anointing of Saul for Kingship

•  The Spirit of the Lord came upon him.

•  He became a ‘new' man.

•  When we are filled with the Spirit we too become like new people. i.e. new desires, new delight in the Lord.

What was he ‘Anointed' to do? 1 Sam: 10 v 1.

•  Be a leader of the Lords inheritance

•  He reigned for 40 years and had many victories, often against the Philistines.

•  What was his downfall? See 13 v 9.

•  He thought he was big enough to offer sacrifices.

•  We need to ‘wait' for God's timing instead of going ahead without Him.

•  The Anointing Saul received became greater than the Giver.

•  Caution for us!

Jesus' Anointing

•  ‘Christ' = anointed one

•  The Anointing of Jesus when He was baptised - see Mark 3:16

•  Anointing by a ‘sinful' woman.

•  The fragrance filled the room.

•  When we are filled with Jesus we too become His fragrance

Anointing for Us

I John 2:20 & 27. “But you have an anointing from the Holy One”

•  It is durable and lasting

•  It is better than human instruction

•  It is the sure evidence of the truth

•  It abides in us to reveal error and makes us aware of the devils lies

What have we been anointed to do?

•  Saul - was given the task of leading the people of Israel under God and to combat the enemy

•  Jesus - to preach good news to the poor & release captives.

•  The apostles - to turn the world downside up

•  Us? See Matt 28 vs 18-20

Concluding Questions:

•  Have we received the Anointing?

•  Are we fulfilling the Anointing?

•  Have we allowed the gift to become greater than the giver?

•  Do we fear it because it bring commitment & responsibility

•  Have we blown it? God is into renewal

•  2 Tim 1:6 “For this I remind you fan into flame the gift (anointing) of God which is in you.”
