Advent Meditation Introduction

The ways of the twenty-first century mean that our tendency is to lose perspective when it comes to spiritual matters. We therefore need to purposefully regain a right perspective, and these meditations could be one way you do that. Let's explain.

A wrong perspective says that the season leading up to Christmas Day is all about purely material things - presents, cards, food and decorations. If this is solely our focus then we arrive at that Day exhausted and unfulfilled.

A right perspective is a balanced perspective, where we hold material and spiritual dimensions in balance.  To obtain this balance in the face of all the advertising and general hype that so often flows through this season, we need to purposefully focus on God and the meaning of Christmas.

That's what these Advent Meditations seek to do. They will take you through the Christmas story as recounted by Matthew and Luke and will allow you to focus in on the truths that are conveyed within the story. They may thus challenge us, encourage us and generally keep us focused when the pressures of life seek to take our eyes away from God, and leave us spiritually dry.

The Meditations are simply thoughts about the verses at the top of the page and as such give no further guidance. May we take this space to remind you that even doing something like this each day can become a tedious additional 'job' if we are not careful. A wise approach is to pray before you start reading, asking the Lord to make the story live to you, and then after you have read, pray and respond to the truths or the questions you may have encountered in the Meditation. The encounter with God is all-important.

If you are a seeker who has stumbled across this site and have decided to use these meditations, then take a step of faith and you pray as we've suggested above. It may be you have little to believe in yet, but try it nevertheless.

My prayer is that each of us may see afresh, or even for the first time, the wonder of what took place nearly two thousand years ago, and find our lives impacted and changed for good. Enjoy these readings. May Christmas this year be especially meaningful for you.
